Correct ✅ or incorrect? ❌

'Organizations without reports of undesirable behavior often feel less safe than organizations that regularly receive such reports'.

This statement may be a bit of an oversimplification, but it does point to an important truth within the dynamics of workplace cultures. In organizations where reports are made with some regularity, employees know how to find the confidential counselor. This sounds very logical, but in many organizations, the confidential counselor exists only on paper, and the threshold to approach them is high. Why is this?

No trust, no reports
For many employees, the threshold to approach the confidential counselor is often high. Employees often come forward only after much deliberation and sleepless nights. The barrier to talking to a confidential counselor can be high for various reasons, depending on the person and the specific situation. Many common reasons why people hesitate to talk to a confidential counselor are:

  • Shame;
  • Fear of consequences;
  • Lack of trust;
  • Uncertainty;
  • Feeling unsafe in the workplace.

Because employees feel hesitant or unsafe to report undesirable behavior, harmful actions can continue unnoticed. This can lead to an atmosphere of tacit approval of such behavior, where employees do not feel safe to express their concerns. This lack of reports can give the impression that everything is fine, while in reality, problems are simmering beneath the surface.

With trust, there are reports
On the other hand, organizations where employees do feel trusted and safe to make reports are often more proactive in addressing undesirable behavior. The fact that employees feel less hesitant to express their concerns shows that the organization is open to communication and willing to take unwanted behavior seriously. This increases the sense of safety and trust within the organization.

In short, the number of reports of undesirable behavior in an organization can serve as a barometer for the health of the work environment. A higher number of reports does not necessarily mean there are more problems, but rather that the organization is actively working to create a safe, trusted, and open culture where employees feel comfortable expressing their concerns. It highlights the importance of a proactive approach and encouraging reports to promote a healthy and safe work environment.
